Skim and Scan - Smart Reading UKS2
A Skim and Scan activity for UKS2 - children have a designated amount of time to read the text and locate specific words. Bonus activity included. Designed to support speed reading and suitable for SAT practice. Also sized for easy cropping if needed to be stuck into books as evidence.
This activity uses a famous scene from Peter Pan that could be accompanied by use of the film for a guided reading session.
Guy Fawkes Reading Activity
A fictional last confession from Guy Fawkes, the night before his execution. (This could be used as a model). Students have a skim and scan activity, encouraging a quick response to locating words within the text. This is followed by a series of vocabulary and language questions, similar to SATs style reading questions.
Fictional Worlds: Reading Comprehension
A KS2 Greater Depth reading comprehension based on an extract from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Questions are SAT style and an answer guide is included.
Fantastic Beasts - Monster Match Up
Students must match the description of the beast to an image. Could be used as a starter or to support SEN children. Encourages consideration of vocabulary choices to aid description.

Funny Vocab Match-Up
Listed in a table that can be easily edited, are a range of unusual and amusing words that are no longer common in todays discourse. Each word is currently matched with a definition but through a quick guillotine could be easily mixed up to provide a challenge. Once matched, they could be used to stimulate a speaking and listening activity.

Students have to locate a series of words within the text - like a wordsearch. My class enjoy having a time limit and seeing who can find the most.
This resource could be used in Guided Reading, as an English starter or as part of a broader Geography topic to inspire the students.

Included here are 7 x extracts from classic fiction such as Black Beauty, The Wind in the Willows & many more. My class really enjoy using a timer to try and improve their speed.
This is aimed at Uks2/3 although it would suit a range of abilities.
Titanic Skim and Scan
Reading activities for UKS2 that aids quick recall and other helpful reading skills. Good revision for KS2 SATS. Children enjoy working against a timer (I recommend between 3-5 minutes) and then trying to beat their score. A quick but valuable activity.
